El libro narra la lucha de Harriet Tubman (1822-1913), una mujer humilde y valiente que se erigió en una de las figura fundamental del movimiento de liberación de los esclavos y activistas por la abolición de la esclavitud en Estados Unidos. Fue una de las promotoras del Underground Railroad, el Ferrocarril Clandestino, una compleja red de rutas y personas, muy activa y eficiente, que ayudó a hombres, mujeres y niños esclavos a huir del sur del país para conquistar su libertad.


Fue también una de las figuras que apoyó el sufragio femenino. En 2013, el gobierno de Estados Unidos quiso reconocer su importancia, proponiendo la creación de un billete de 20 dólares con su retrato, pero el proyecto aún está en curso.


Es un libro de divulgación e información histórica muy rigurosa, pero también cuenta con una dimensión literaria que resalta valores como la libertad y el amor por la vida.
